The DanceCam initiative aims at improving astronomical wide-field imaging from the ground, using a combination of machine learning and high resolution video streams of the deep sky.

Video imaging offers many advantages over conventional long exposures:

Seeing

The blurring effects of the atmosphere can be mitigated using either Lucky imaging, "rubber focal plane" or more advanced image reconstruction techniques.

Transient artifacts

Transient artifacts such as cosmic ray hits and satellite streaks can easily be removed.

Efficiency

Readout time is negligible and physical shutters, guiders, or de-rotators are not required.

Image stacking

Sidereal and non-sidereal guiding can be performed simultaneously using digital image stacking.

Sky monitoring

Sky transparency and seeing can be monitored in real time.
